A Roman Stroll in the Vineyards

Length: 2 and a quarter hours Level: easy, for the whole family. Parking : Office de Tourisme de Vaison la Romaine

le_pont_romain.jpgAn outing which combines exploration of the civilizations which have lived here for over 2000 years – the Romans, the Voconce tribe, and the Middle Ages in  Vaison. Cycle by terraced vineyards and the slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail range of hills.

From the Roman bridge, cross the D938 road and take the uphill toward the medieval town. Go through the entrance portico at the upper town and follow straight the street that takes you out of town on the western side. This street leads to the road which goes in the direction of Le Crestet  toward the top of the city of Vaison. Take a left: the road goes around the rock, and after a hairpin curve, it runs along an old aqueduct and reaches the "Chemin des Bois Communaux" at the top of the hill on the right. Follow the local path marked with little yellow and red marks. At the "Ferme des Andiolles", the marks lead to the right, along a vineyard. Continue on the paved road which winds south amid crops and woods. At the "Ferme Barbanot", change direction and go north-east then north at the next curve. Continue 300 m further on. Do not go up on the “Chemin de Terre sur Serre Long” ! Do another 250 m where there are no marks, and reach the wider road called "Chemin des Fontaines". Go straight, in the direction of Vaison. 2.5 km farther, by a quarry, lookout point with an orientation table. Vast panorama over the Ouvèze valley with views of Mont Ventoux. Slightly afterward, back at the top of Vaison. Go through the upper city and slowly return to the Roman bridge.
