The Festival d'Avignon is one of the oldest and most famous theatre festivals in the world. This year – 2009 – will be the 63rd edition of the Avignon Festival. Each summer in July, for three weeks’ running, the city of Avignon turns into one enormous stage putting on the very best in contemporary creation from Europe. Talented actors, renowned directors, outstanding performances await audiences from all horizons, origins and generations. Many different venues, including the legendary Honour Courtyard at the Palace of the Popes.
Over 600 performances take place throughout the entire city of Avignon – between the Festival In and the Festival Off. Street theatre, impromptu and improvisation at the sidewalk cafés, advance previews of the plays to come performed by the troupes as they parade through the streets.
