Protected since time immemorial by its strategic location atop a rocky outcrop, Venasque is truly an authentic village in the Comtat Venaissin. Famous for its preserved condition, Venasque has many registered historical monuments. Also, in 1967, a municipal decree prohibited any outside modifications to the houses in the village, and ordered all renovations to be rebuilt according to the original.

Around Venasque, you can also explore :
  • Saint Didier à 5 km
  • Malemort du Comtat à 4 km
  • Méthamis à 6 km
Don’t miss:
  • The Romanesque Church, dedicated to Notre-Dame. The church houses a famous painting from the Ecole d'Avignon(1498), depicting a Crucifixion.
  • The Roman Towers built to protect the village from the invasions launched by the Saracens. These towers protected the town at its sole vulnerable spot.
  • From the Esplanade in front of the Towers, you have a magnificent view over the entire northern part of the Comtat Venaissin, up to the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range, and Mont Ventoux (1912m)

As you come back down, in the direction of Carpentras on the road which winds around the rock, you go in front of a small, abandoned church. The stone erected here commemorates the miraculous leap by the Horse ridden by Saint-Siffrein (the historical veracity of this story has not been confirmed).
