Arch of Triumph

1st century AD – World Heritage

When the Romans marched from Lyon to Orange, they followed a road lined by sarcophagi, then entered Orange through the monumental Arch of Triumph. The Arch of Triumph was dedicated to the glory of the Veterans of the 2nd Gallic Legion, founders of the Roman colony of Orange. See sculptures of weapons, trophies and ships which evoke the supremacy of Rome on land and sea.

Roman Theatre
1st century AD – World Heritage
thatre_orange.jpgThe Roman theatre in Orange is famous for its outstanding condition. It still has all the elements of a Roman theatre as defined by Vitruvius – the cavea (semi-circular steps, side entrances, and stage wall flanked by the parascenia. The theatre was designed to hold the Gallo-Roman audiences and was one way Rome transmitted its culture and language. The theatre could hold 7000 spectators, who came and attended tragedies, comedies and performances of dance, acrobatics and juggling. Today, the Chorégies d'Orange are performed here. During the 19th century, the theatre started being used once again for entertainment. Concerts, ballets, tragedies, comedies and operas are performed, featuring the best artists from around the world. Since 1972, the Chorégies have specialized in lyrical art. The festival takes place in July and early August. thatre_antique.jpg
