The small town of Le Thor goes back to the high Middle Ages. References to the town have been documented in a deed from 1125. The church in Le Thor, Notre-Dame-du-Lac, is a jewel of Romanesque architecture. The church stands on the banks of the Sorgue river, which mirrors the beautiful architecture. The historical centre was originally surrounded by ramparts, and is well worth a visit. One of the entrances into the ramparts still remains – the entrance was remodelled in 1847 to hold the town clock. Today, it is crowned by a beautiful wrought iron campanile. The medieval château, which goes back to the 12th century, has been remodelled and restored many times.

Around le Thor, you can also explore :
Just two kilometers from Le Thor, Thouzon Hill rises above the plain. The hill was occupied by prehistoric man during the Neolithic era. And THOUZON CAVE, referred to as the “Fairy Grotto” opens at the very base of THOUZON Hill. The cave is on a human scale, yet is a treasure trove of intense mineral activity. Fabulous crystallization, with stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, rimstone basins, cave pearls, and strong geological interest too, with balance pillars, alluvial cones, clogged joints, wells, meanders, flint nodules and other features….
