The town of Mérindol lies amidst the foothills of the southern Luberon. Mérindol overlooks the vast Durance River plains, all the way to the Alpilles. It is located within the Luberon Regional Natural Park, and offers a very pleasant atmosphere and quality environment. The Luberon Park has taken advantage of Mérindol’s very special location to set up an ornithological observatory along the banks of the Durance. Mérindol is highly symbolic of the Waldensian history in the area, and is on the Historic Waldensian Road. It is the guardian of the memory of the era – the 16th century Waldensian movement – which marked Provence and in particular the Luberon.Mérindol is also an active hiking centre. The GR6 hiking path goes through the village and the GR97 is close by. It is also a great starting point for biking and horseback riding outings.
